Core aeration from Elite Exteriors pulls small plugs of soil across your entire lawn, relieving compaction and letting water, oxygen and nutrients reach the root zone, a natural complement to our home-focused exterior cleaning services across Floyds Knobs and Southern Indiana. It is one of the single highest-impact things you can do for lawn health, and the results compound year over year.
Southern Indiana soils are heavy on clay, and years of foot traffic, mowing, kids and pets compact the top few inches until water simply runs off instead of soaking in. Compacted soil starves grass roots of oxygen, encourages surface thatch, and turns lawns yellow every summer no matter how much you water. Core aeration is the single most cost-effective fix.
We run a commercial-grade core aerator across your entire lawn, pulling thousands of small soil plugs that are left on the surface to break down naturally over one to two weeks. The holes created allow water, air and fertilizer to reach the root zone immediately, and the plugs re-introduce beneficial soil microbes as they break down.
Within a few weeks the roots begin expanding into the loosened soil, the lawn starts thickening, and drought tolerance measurably improves. Lawns aerated on the right schedule handle summer stress dramatically better than lawns that haven't been aerated in years.
For the cool-season grasses that dominate Southern Indiana lawns (tall fescue, Kentucky bluegrass, fine fescue), early fall is the ideal time to aerate. The soil is still warm, cool nights promote root growth, and fall aeration sets the lawn up for a much stronger spring green-up.
Aeration is also the single best window for overseeding. Seed dropped immediately after aeration falls into the plug holes for direct soil contact, dramatically higher germination rates and thicker, denser turf. If overseeding is part of the plan, tell us when you request a quote and we'll time it correctly.
A thick, green lawn stands out even more against freshly washed siding and clean windows. Many customers pair aeration with house washing and pressure washing in the same seasonal visit to reset the entire property at once, the fall aeration window lines up perfectly with pre-winter exterior cleaning.
Fall aeration is also a natural time to book gutter cleaning, once the leaves are down the trough is cleared, the downspouts flow, and the freshly aerated lawn is not buried under debris going into winter.
The dominant soil type across Floyd County and most of Southern Indiana is a clay-heavy loam that compacts fast under normal residential use, foot traffic, mowing, kids, dogs, patio furniture. Once the top three to four inches of that soil is compacted, water beads on the surface and rolls off instead of soaking in, roots stall in the top inch of soil, and every summer stress event (drought, heat wave, disease pressure) hits harder than it should.
Core aeration is the single most cost-effective fix. It physically removes plugs, opening thousands of channels for water, oxygen and nutrients to reach the root zone. One properly-timed aeration visit produces visible improvement within three to four weeks and compounds over subsequent seasons.
Aeration is the single best window in the year to overseed. Seed dropped right after aeration falls directly into plug holes for guaranteed soil contact, dramatically higher germination rates, and thicker, more uniform turf. If overseeding is in the plan, we use a premium cool-season blend appropriate for Southern Indiana lawns (turf-type tall fescue with a smaller percentage of Kentucky bluegrass and fine fescue for shade areas).
After aeration, water lightly and frequently for the first two weeks if overseeding, or normally if not. Leave the plugs on the surface, they break down within one to two weeks and return valuable soil biology to the lawn. Wait at least 24 to 48 hours before mowing, and if you overseeded, wait until the new grass has been mowed twice before applying any pre-emergent.
For the cool-season grasses that dominate our area, early fall (mid-September through mid-October) is the ideal aeration window, warm soil, cool nights, active root growth. Spring aeration is a viable second choice, especially for lawns that skipped the fall window.
Pricing is by square footage. Most residential lawns fall in a predictable band, and bundling aeration with a full-property exterior visit (house wash, driveway wash, gutter clean) is a common fall combo that resets the entire property before winter.
